Season 8: Motown Week...Ain't Too Proud to Beg

Who knew that President Obama's preempting of American Idol would keep me hangin' on for one more day? I was actually glad for the preempting because I was able to watch The Biggest Loser (the one-hour of show and the one-hour of commercials) in its entirety Tuesday night. I wish, truly, that Idol was on every Wednesday and Thursday instead. But, I can't help myself...I'll be there every Tuesday night to watch American Idol with the rest of you fine people; Biggest Loser will just have to be DVR-ed. American Idol, you've really got a hold on me.

Bonus Question: Where did Motown get its name?

First up tonight was my guy...

Matt Giraud: Let's Get it On. Matt impresses me more and more every week; I hear a symphony each time he takes the stage. I really enjoyed his performance of this song tonight; this old heart of mine was melting as he crooned. I was glad to see him step away from the piano in the middle of his song. It made for a nice dramatic effect and a punch of charisma. I love Matt's falsetto...I don't love his super tight pants, though. I think Matt's one weakness is that he tries to do too much with some of his songs. It's like he strays too far from what he's doing, and embellishes a little too much. The judges, obviously, don't agree with me on that since they said he had just the right amount of artistic license incorporated into his performances. Rating: 8

Kris Allen: How Sweet It Is. Kris has a boyish charm about him, so this was a perfect song choice. It fit well with his sweet, unassuming, almost cute style. I am convinced that Kris is this year's Archuleta....only more polished and minus the scary stage dad. It was pleasant enough to hear (I'm still not sure I enjoy watching the side-mouth singing), but I'm just not sure that the song really ever went anywhere. The whole performance was kind of a droning monotone, until he got to his big ending note. Rating: 7

Scott MacIntyre: You Can't Hurry Love. Nice Supremes, Scott! Those ladies looked a little silly standing around his piano like that. It was like some sort of strange lounge restaurant thing. For me, Scott's performances always fall comfortably into the category of Adult Contemporary. There is nothing cutting edge or new or different about Scott's music. I guess, though, if he's trying to get into the Adult Contemporary scene...or, dare I say, the Contemporary Christian music scene, he'll be wildly successful with his exposure on the show. I know he's not going to win...America knows he's not going to win...I'm pretty sure at this point that even Scott knows he's not going to win. But God bless him for going out there and doing what he needs to do, and keeping his own musical stylings, in open defiance of what any of the judges tell him to do. Scott knows what he's good at, and he's playing to his strengths. And I think he'll manage to stay afloat for just a little while longer in this competition. Rating: 6

This is not a bonus question, but rather an annoyance question--Why does Kara continually over-pronounce her words as if she is trying to communicate with chimpanzees? She especially does this with Scott. I'm peeved.

Megan Joy: For Once in my Life. Oh boy. I've been Megan's advocate since the beginning of the season...even when nobody else liked her, and even when she was adopted as the poster child for Vote for the Worst. But I just can't overlook tonight's performance. I haven't seen much worse on Idol from the Top 10 stage. That was an abomination. And I really think she could have been good. The song just moved too quickly for Megan's style of singing. I'm no musical expert, and I could even tell that. Megan got better toward the end of the song, but man, was the beginning horrible! Megan, I want you back to the singer you used to be! Isn't she lovely, though? Megan never fails to take the stage looking stunning...now I sound like Paula. I'm just afraid she's cruisin' right out of this competition. Rating: 5

Anoop Desai: Ooo Baby Baby. Anoop has really turned it around these last two weeks. He's quickly becoming one of my favorites. Take note, Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert, the gimmicky thing doesn't work for me....ain't nothing like the real thing; just be natural. Anoop's falsetto was beautiful. His performance was emotionally connected and raw. I was overjoyed to hear him sing. Anoop, if I were your woman, I would have fallen in love with you over the last two weeks. Rating: 8

Michael Sarver: Ain't Too Proud to Beg. I can't critique Michael's performance because I left the room to go make popcorn for the residents. From what I heard on the recap, though, it wasn't pretty. I'm afraid it might be the end of the road for Michael.

Lil Rounds: Heat Wave. Before I write anything about the music, I need to address something. Lil needs to shop around for a new wig. Is it just my imagination, or did it look like that thing was on sideways. I thought Lil's performance was decent in some parts, but it was the worst I've heard her in other parts. She was out of breath and had some really screechy notes. And her personality was a little dead tonight, too. Part of me wonders if Lil is more hype than talent. Rating: 6

Adam Lambert: Tracks of my Tears. Oh, mercy mercy me...I am having trouble focusing on Adam's singing tonight because he looks like Elvis...and not the real Elvis, but a Vegas-style Elvis. He could deep fry a turkey with all of the grease in his hair. Gross! My opinion of Adam's performance tonight is not going to be a popular one. Yes, he sang a very pretty rendition of the song. Yes, it was tender and reserved. But Adam is trying too hard to play the part of this season's enigma. Why does he have to be a different person every single week? Why did he dress up like Lyle Lovett this week when he was some kind of lewd temptress (yes, I used the feminine on purpose) last week? I'm not fooled by Adam's shenanigans. He's a good singer, but at this point, his whole schtick is shock value. I'm not buying what he's selling. I'm over it. Plus, why did the judges praise Adam for singing such a groundbreaking version? In my opinion, it was just the same old song, but it sounded different because of the greased hair and the suit. Performance Rating: 8 (character/appearance rating: 2) Bonus Question: What were Kara's 6 words for Adam?

Danny Gokey: Get Ready. Danny, maybe it's a superstition, but why do you have to use your arms to demonstrate the notes you are singing? It's like a stinking male version of Mariah Carey! I think Danny's vocal sounded pretty good, but the arrangement and the performance istelf were cheesy. From the trumpets, to the fake pips (not to mention Danny's dancing with the fake pips), to the singing into the camera, it was all a little hokey. But cheese is what works best on Danny, I suppose. And, just like Scott, if it works, you better use it. But you better believe I'm going to start calling him "hokey Gokey." Can I get a witness? Rating: 7

Allison Iraheta: Papa Was a Rollin' Stone. Now, Allison is my girl, but I think she is still extremely difficult to understand when she's singing. Maybe she flubbed the lyrics this week, but I found her lyrics exceptionally difficult to decipher. On the other hand, though, she can sing! I love listening to her voice because she makes it seem easy. The song never really took off until the end, but when it did, it blasted into outer space! This wasn't my favorite performance of Allison's, but she definitely doesn't deserve to be in the bottom 3 this week (she didn't last week either, for that matter). Rating: 7

What's goin' on with these judges tonight? I don't know how they can pay attention to the show when they're playing with each other all night long (all night). Paula is getting out coloring books and "crowns", as Seacrest called them...and Simon is drawing mustaches on people? By the by, there is no way someone could have marked on Paula's face that much if she hadn't sat there and allowed them to do it. It was kind of a funny gag, though. Now that Simon's single, though, he better watch out. Sometimes the one who really loves you is the one you fight with the most.

Now, we're doing something a little different with the blog this week. I have hidden several Motown song titles (I mean a ton of them) within the words of this blog. Your job is to find as many of these song titles as you can and email me a list of the titles (just giving me a number is not good enough). Each song title you find is worth one point, so there is potential for big points this week! Season 8: Top 11 - Grand Ole Opry Week - Fancy

While I'm not your run of the mill country music fan, I enjoy a smattering of Martina or Reba every now and then...and country music week is always one I look to with great anticipation every season on American Idol. I feel like country music week allows the competitors the opportunity to really prove their musicianship. It seems like every season, this is the week when the true talent starts to reveal itself, and the contestants start to really come into their own as artists.

That being said, I felt like tonight's episode was a bit of a disappointment (with the exception of Randy Travis...I love that guy). It seemed to move too slowly and to drag on forever. I felt like the judges' bickering was never going to end...and the contestants were much too talky tonight as they were being critiqued. Apparently the Idol people needed some filler because they didn't have enough show. I'll be glad in two weeks when Tuesday episodes go down to just an hour.

The big surprise of the evening was that the Golden Children (Danny, Adam, Lil) were the ones who really faltered, and the contestants who have been in the shadows (Matt, Kris, Anoop) had standout performances. I'll be interested to see what impact this has over the next few weeks.

Michael Sarver - Ain't Goin' Down 'Til the Sun Comes Up. Poor Michael. He is the least memorable contestant on the show right now, and he got the dreaded duty of singing first. I'm afraid this spells doom for Michael. He made a great song choice. America needed to hear him perform something upbeat and fun after last week's "You Are Not Alone" debacle. I thought Michael's performance was decent...it's probably my favorite performance of his. But there's something about him that still bothers me a little: he pronounces his words so strangely when he sings. I think it boils down to his mouth. He keeps his mouth muscles so tense and tightened that it inhibits his enunciation and he sounds very weird when he sings. I'm always distracted by it...maybe I'm the only one. I think Michael's voice seemed a little weak, but he managed to cover it up for the most part with this fun song. Rating: 7 Bonus Question: What was Michael's "perfect" retort to Simon's criticism that he sounded like he was singing karaoke and had some pitch problems?

Allison Iraheta - Blame it on your Heart. I liked Allison's softer look tonight; it was very becoming on her and she looked pretty. Maybe if she makes it to the Top 10. someone will do something with that cherry Kool-Aid hair of hers. I really liked Allison's performance. She's so authentic. A lot of people on Idol are good singers, but Allison is such a well-rounded performer. I hope she will sing a ballad next week, so that we can see other facets of her vocals. Rating: 8

By the way, for anyone who missed it, Kara's comment to Allison was, "I think you could sing the Alphabet and it would sound good." Umm...Kara, there's already a song for that...I think she meant to say Allison could sing the phonebook.

Kris Allen- Make You Feel My Love. Before I talk about Kris's performance, I have to say this: is anyone else annoyed by his side-mouth singing? I've gotten to the point where I tend to look away while Kris is singing. It's so distracting...he looks like he sucked on a lemon before he started singing.--sorry, I just had to get that out. Now, man, I LOVE that song (British soul singer Adele has a heart-wrenching rendition of it available for purchase on iTunes)! It is probably one of my favorite love songs of all time. Kris sang it well. He had a tenderness and a vulnerability (I wrote those words before the judges used them, thank you very much) that captured the emotion behind the song. I was unsure about Kris going into this week, but he won me over with this performance. Hopefully he's starting to make a name for himself in this competition...I think he's been a little lost in the shuffle up until now. Rating: 8

Lil Rounds - Independence Day. I can sort of understand Lil's reasoning behind making this song choice....sort of. Everyone was expecting Lil to choose something like Dolly's "I Will Always Love You" or Trisha Yearwood's "How do I Live"...songs that are big, well-known ballads. And if she would have picked those, she would have killed it with them. But she would have disappointed by making such predictable choices. So I think Lil decided to do something a little more off-beat. But I think she should have chosen some really fun, up-tempo country song (like Carrie Underwood's "Last Name" or Reba's "Fancy")....if she wanted to truly "honor country music" as she said in her Seacrest interview, she should have chosen a country song with an attitude and really performed it. But instead, she chose something bland and sort of did a half-butt job...(that phrase doesn't sound right unless you curse). I just think Lil didn't really connect with the song tonight...she was boring I daresay a little pitchy in some parts. Rating: 6 Bonus Question: What name did Simon keep "mistakenly" calling Lil when he was speaking to her after her performance?

By the way, I can normally tolerate (even appreciate) Simon, but he was really snarky tonight with the way he treated Lil. It seems like every season he manages to "forget" at least one person's name (last season he forgot Carly Smithson's name a number of times). I don't believe he forgot her name for a second...as a producer of the show, he is invested in the contestants...I'm sure he's in meetings and interviews and other happenings throughout the season that make it impossible to forget these people's names. What a self-important prat. That's all I have to say.

Adam Lambert - Ring of Fire. I remember a couple weeks ago writing that I was "on team Adam"....I am sadly here to inform you that I have hereby turned in my jersey. What the crap was that?!? I felt like Adam's performance was cocky, self-worthy, desperate, and needy. What a joke! I really enjoy when contestants on the show take a song and conform it to their own style (David Cook and Jason Castro were masters at this), but the difference with Adam is that he was purely and simply going for shock value. The rendition of "Ring of Fire" he chose to sing tonight was nothing like his own personal style. I feel like Adam scoured the Internet for the strangest arrangement he could find, and then decided to go with that. I would have preferred for Adam to choose a true country arrangement of a country song, and then to put his own spin on it by throwing in a few high-pitched banshee calls and runs. Instead, Adam brought out the hookahs and the sitars and the magic carpets and ruined Johnny Cash's legendary hit. And it was horrible. He was trying too hard. Rating: 5

By the way, what's with all the Taylor Hicks bashing this season? This is at least the third time I've heard them use Hicks as a derogatory remark in the last 3 weeks! I'm no Taylor Hicks fan, but come on! They should support him...he won on their show, for crying out loud.

Scott MacIntyre - Wild Angels. Well, Scott is an incredible piano player...I just wish they'd turn his mic off. Scott's voice just isn't there. He's singing more and more through his nose, and tonight's song was too low for him in parts. It did sound better when the band came in and joined him, but I just don't think Scott is good enough for American Idol. On the other hand, there are a lot of performers who make a career of singing with a nasally sounding voice (Mark Schultz is one in the Christian arena). The singer/songwriter thing really works for a lot of markets. I'd be shocked if there wasn't a Scott MacIntyre album on the shelf at your local Christian bookstore within the next year. Rating: 6

And then we have to watch a 10 minute sparring match between Paula and Simon about whether or not Scott should sit behind a piano while he sings. And I begin to pull my hair out.

Alexis - Jolene. I didn't like this arrangement of the song. I couldn't tell if it was just a weird arrangement, or if Alexis was falling behind in some parts, but it seemed like the song just stalled at certain points. It just wasn't happening for me tonight. Alexis sang it pretty, like she always does. But frankly, I'm getting a little bored with her trying to "Aretha-tize" every song she does. Can't she just sing something soft and pretty with emotion? Also, I wish she would get over the whole "dirty" thing. It seems like she's trying too hard (I'm fully aware that I sound like a broken record, but so does Alexis). Rating: 7

Does anyone else think these new Old Navy commercials with the talking mannequins are really annoying? I may never shop at Old Navy again...

Danny Gokey - Jesus Take the Wheel. I know a lot of you really like Danny, but I'm still getting a pretentious vibe from him....and especially after his opening segment. Don't you think that if you were going in to sing for Randy Travis, that you would practice a little and have your song prepared beforehand?!? I managed to get over that so I could watch Danny's performance of the song. Then I became angry again when he started using his Mariah Carey "diva" hand. Why do people do that? I think Danny would have done better to choose something with a little more soul. Pop ballads don't suit his voice and his musical style. Speaking of Taylor Hicks, I think Danny is sort of a Taylor Hicks 2.0 - minus the gray hair and harmonica. The chorus of the song definitely sounded better than the verses, but this performance was the worst I've seen of him. Rating: 6

Anoop Desai - You Were Always on my Mind. I have to eat my words a little from last week. I said that Anoop lacked the vocal ability and relied on shock value and charisma to get him through the competition. Anoop proved me wrong. He picked the best song he could have chosen. He did retain some of that shock value, though...who knew Anoop could sing a serious, tender and heartfelt song? I was blown away by his vocals tonight. He definitely out sang the front runners of the competition, and I'm really happy for him. And then, as if his emotional performance was not enough, he threw in a little falsetto as the cherry on the top! Since I returned my Adam Lambert jersey, I'd like to join team Noop Dogg...consider me a fan. Rating: 9

Megan Joy -Walkin' After Midnight. I knew Megan would sing Pasty Cline tonight, but I thought she'd go with "Crazy". I think she made the right choice, though. "Crazy" would have brought the mood down a little too much. I think Megan did a good job tonight. Maybe America is finally starting to figure her out...I hope? Megan is a bluesy jazz singer who does contemporary music with a vintage feel. She's comparable to Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Adele, or even someone like a Norah Jones. True, she isn't as seasoned and polished as those ladies are (with the exception of Amy Winehouse, of course), but that will develop over time. In addition to Noop Dogg, I'm also on Team Megan....along with everyone at Vote For the Worst. All I know is that Megan's rendition of this song was a million times better than Kellie ("nawdy whut?") Pickler's version two years ago. And Megan's dress was really pretty tonight...no matter what Simon had to say about it. Rating: 8

Matt Giruad - So Small. I was very surprised by Matt's decision to sing this song...but as it turns out, he knows himself better than I know him...who knew? And he gave a terrific performance tonight. The piano was exquisite (by the way, why didn't the judges chastise him for using the piano two weeks in a row?). And Matt's vocals were good....especially with the chorus of the song. Matt's voice clearly is not the strongest, "beltiest", most powerful voice on the show, but his genuine musicianship shines through more and more each week. For some people, the slight imperfections in their voice only give them more character and originality (Jason Castro, again, is a prime example...along with someone like Bob Dylan). If it's possible to do this, I'm also joining Team Matt. Rating: 9

So, in summary: I never liked Danny, I'm over Adam, My affections are wavering for Alexis, I've always loved Megan, I love Matt even more than I did before, Anoop has my vote, and Kris Allen is getting there.

Season 8 is strange for me...usually by this point in the season, I've chosen my favorite and made my mind up as to a general ranking of the contestants. I'm just not getting that this time. Anyone else feel this way?

Season 8: Top 13 - Michael Jackson Week...Beat It!

They're calling this the "finals" of American Idol, but I think this is when the season really gets started. Because Michael Jackson is kicking of a farewell tour later this year, AI decided to promote him and his music and do a Michael-themed week. Personally, I think the decision to do Michael Jackson songs was long overdue. They're fan favorites, and generally easy to sing.

Only, tonight, what happened to the standards? Where was Billie Jean or Smooth Criminal? What happened to Bad and Thriller? Why were we not graced with the stylings of some finalist singing Heal the World or Don't Stop Til You Get Enough....or even the theme song from Free Willy (a personal favorite of mine)? The contestants (with the exception of one or two, Adam and Anoop) chickened out and chose the lesser known MJ songs...much to America's collective disappointment. But fear not, my fairweather friends, I'm sure we'll hear a nice montage tomorrow night during the always entertaining group performance...if we don't get some "We Are the World" I might throw a remote or two.

Here's what happened tonight:

First of all, does anyone else think it's getting a little old to hear Randy tirelessly and mockingly "boo" every single time someone says the word "Simon"? Come on! The only one who likes that running gag is Randy himself. Please stop.

In semi-important news that we all saw coming, there will be a double elimination tomorrow night. Because of this, we are going to be selecting a Bottom 4, rather than a Bottom 3. I have the feeling they are going to change the format of the elimination in order to make the judges seem like they actually have necessary jobs...more on this later.

Lil Rounds - The Way You Make Me Feel. This was a predictable song choice for Lil (so predictable, in fact, that 3 people predicted it for her). I thought her outfit was horrendous. She committed at least four fashion crimes that I noticed...and after that, I stopped counting.

-The one-shoulder ruffle get up (1) was too distracting, and the high-wasted (2), tapered leg (3), white (4) pants were disgusting. I would have thought Lil would have had a "lil" more fashion sense than that...sorry. Her name is Lil, you should expect plenty more puns this season. I thought Lil's performance was a little lackluster. There wasn't anything commendable about it. She went out there and sang a Michael Jackson song. She sounded okay, but there was no pizzazz. She had some pitch problems, but they were balanced out by the way she took control of the stage. Rating: 7

Note: Paula looked especially dead behind the eyes tonight...does anyone agree?

Scott MacIntyre - Keep the Faith. Scott's piano playing was exquisite. I can definitely see Scott's influence from Billy Joel and Mark Schultz (two of his favorite artists). Scott sounds much better from behind a piano. He did sing a little nasally, but I thought this was much improved over last week's mandolin fiasco. One thing that Scott should work on, he has sort of an inspirational schtick. Honestly, I think he's inspirational enough without having to sing inspirational songs every single week. Let's hear him sing a traditional love song next week, ok? Rating; 7

Danny Gokey - PYT. Danny had a little bit of a rough beginning, but then the song became more fluid as it went along. He got really screamy in parts, and that threw me a little. I never took him for that type of singer. I think Danny has a big voice and good energy. If he can learn to channel them in the right direction, then I think he'll do well, but tonight, it was like he was trying to do some sort of strange combination of Adam Lambert's vocal ability and Anoop Desai's energy. It just didn't work for him. This was definitely not Danny's best performance, but I wouldn't say it was exactly horrible. I want to give him a 6.5, but since I don't do half numbers, I'll round up. Rating: 7

Michael Sarver - You Are Not Alone. All I can think of when I hear this song is Michael Jackson's 1995 "Ellen" haircut, and then that weird Egyptian-themed bedroom scene with Michael and Lisa Marie Pressley. Eww..I just shuddered from that flashback. First of all, let me say how cute are Michael Sarver's kids?! Now, onto the bad stuff. Michael made a poor choice in this song. He should have chosen something memorable to really come out and punch the audience in the face. Instead, he chose one of the most mellow Michael Jackson songs. Michael S. drove me nuts when he was singing this song...he was singing at the back of his throat like Kermit the Frog. And he had very strange pronunciation of some of his words. It was like he was an American, trying to sing in English with a French accent. It just didn't work. Aside from all of that, he hit some really bad notes, too. That's a shame, because Michael seems like a really nice guy. Rating: 6

Jasmine Murray: I'll Be There. Here's another obvious song choice. I still don't get it with Jasmine. I can't comprehend what the judges see in her. There must be something there that's juts not coming across on TV...or, the judges are whack! I don't know why the judges haven't criticized Jasmine for being too "pageanty" yet...she's already admitted to having done pageants her whole life! And that's how she comes across, like a pageant contestant, rather than someone who wants to make a career out of her musical talent. I was waiting for Jasmine to pull out a fire baton and start doing cartwheels across the stage. Her voice didn't sound good at all, but I guess, in the world of American Idol, as long as you're "commercial" (thank you, Kara), you are what they are looking for. Rating: 6 Bonus Question: Who did Randy "name drop" while he was giving his critque of Jasmine's performance?

Kris Allen: Remember the Time. Oh my goodness. Kris has a boring personality and an even more boring family. He didn't do himself any favors by showcasing them at the beginning of his segment tonight. But I guess, your family is your family and you're stuck with them...right? Kris's performance was actually the best I've seen him so far. I thought he gave a nice, funky edge to the song, and sounded great. His voice cracked a little, and he's another one who needs to figure out how to use all that engergy he has. But I thought overall, the performance was pretty good. He is definitely better with a guitar. Man, I felt bad for Kris's wife after Simon told Kris he should have kept her a secret...she didn't look very happy about that (and understandably so). Rating: 7

Allison Iraheta: Give It To Me. Allison has quickly become one of my favorites in the competition. I appreciate that she knows exactly who she is, and she doesn't try to transform her style with every new song she sings. If Allison is singing, I always know it's her. But she manages to maintain her identity without getting boring. One complaint I have is that Allison's lyrics are very difficult to understand at times. I don't know if it's the braces or just the way she holds her mouth, but I couldn't understand about half of the words she sang tonight. Allison is like a more talented version of last season's Amanda Overmeyer. Let's just hope she doesn't come out with big, skunk hair anytime soon. Rating: 8

Anoop Desai: Beat It. Nice haircut. I've come to realize that Anoop is more show than he is voice (kinda like Michael Jackson himself, actually). Anoop always goes on the stage with such an air about him that you can't help but to enjoy one of his performances. I like that he thinks he's way cooler than he actually is..and, ironically, this actually makes him cool. But if you close your eyes, his voice is really sub par. And one more thing, I really hate when people sing their own echo at the end of a song. Rating: 6 (although, I give Anoop Dog mad props for braving a very well-known song...I may have given him an extra point or two if he had done the "Beat It" dance during his performance). Bonus Question: What did Paula say to make the audience "boo" at her?

Jorge Nunez: Never Can Say Goodbye. Now, I've been to Puerto Rico before, and I can verify that it is just like the show depicted tonight. There are 47 people crammed into the living room of a tiny little house and it's loud and hot and people are salsa and merengue dancing whenever they feel the urge. Boy, Jorge's background singers sounded really bad at the beginning of his song. Of all of the Michael Jackson songs available, why would he choose this song? It just doens't make sense to me. I mean, Jorge sort of answered this question when Paula asked him, but I still don't understand why he couldn't have chosen something a little better. Jorge sang the song very well, but I'm afraid he's going to get lost in the shuffle among the standout performances. I actually heard Jorge's accent come out during his song tonight for the first time...I thought it was charming. Kara needs to give Jorge a break though, I've heard her say numerous times that Jorge is going to have a difficult time because of the langauge barrier. Well, as far as I know, almost every child is taught both Spanish and English when they start school in Puerto Rico. I didn't meet anyone there who didn't speak English. Get it straight, Kara. I think Jorge's English is very good. Rating: 7

Megan Joy...or Megan Corkrey...or, whatever we're calling her these days. Rockin' Robin. I thought this song choice was actually a pretty smart one for Megan, albeit safe, but it was still smart because it played to the unique characteristics of her voice. I thought her voice sounded good throughout the song...it had a different edgy rasp to it tonight that I hadn't heard before. It was a cute performance, and I was glad to see that Megan was still workin' that dance move of hers. Her performance was just as charming as it was cheesy...wait a minute...scratch everything I just said, I can't believe that Megan screeched "Caw, Caw" at the end of her performance! That took her down two full points in my estimation. Rating: 6

Really?! Caw, Caw. What are we supposed to do with that, Megan?

Adam Lambert: Black or White. I would like to congratulate Adam for unabashedly choosing a Michael Jackson favorite, and allowing fans of American Idol to enjoy one of these performances, for crying out loud! At the beginning of Adam's song, I was a little anxious. It seemed to have fallen kind of dead until he got to the first chorus. Then Adam sounded great. The second half of the song was a million times better than the first, and I agree with the judges that Adam's performance was on a different caliber than the others tonight. Rating: 8

Matt Giraud: Human Nature. I loved Matt's piano. He definitely seemed more at home singing from behind the instrument, rather than standing there with a mic stand trying to belt out Coldplay. Matt's voice isn't necessarily the strongest and most precise in the competition, but I think he does a good job of using the vocal abilities he has and playing to his strengths. He has a surprisingly good falsetto (for which I have a terrible weakness), and I think his soulful, bluesy vibe comes through in everything he does. I was really hoping Matt would sing "Butterflies", though...aww shucks. Rating: 8

And by the way, judges, I was slightly offended when the comparison was made with Matt and Justin Timberlake or Robin Thicke. First of all, Justin Timberlake doesn't even do anything besides prance around and look cool..and Robin Thicke is annoying! I think Matt is already a more well-rounded musician than these two.

Alexis Grace: Dirty Diana. Alexis naturally sounded very good with this performance. She's confident and she knows what she's good at. Her voice is astounding and probably one of the best female voices to ever be on American Idol. I hope nobody dialed in the wrong number for Alexis tonight, because the IDOLS-13 phone number was to a naughty phone call center...although, with Alexis's outfit tonight, maybe that's what her voters were looking for...I'm just sayin'...Rating: 8

Overall, I thought it was a pretty good week. Michael Jackson brought an interesting spin on things...I'm just glad the man himself didn't make an appearance. That would have been a little strange.

And now, for the big secret we're all going to learn tomorrow about the contestants being sent home. I have a feeling that American Idol viewers have started to pick up on the fact that, once the Top 12 come into play, the judges are basically useless and pointless. And so I think this year, producers have devised a plan to make use of the judges and make it seem like it's actually necessary for them to be there: I think that with the eliminations on Wednesday nights, the bottom two vote-getters are going to have to participate in a sing-off that will be decided by the judges. I don't know if I'm right or not, but I just have a hunch.

If this happens, I will be a little happier because then we won't have to endure 55 minutes of fluff in order to find out who has been eliminated on Wednesday nights...this will give us something jucier to look forward to.

But more than that, I'm disgusted because this is supposed to be America's show...and for the American Idol people to not trust the American public to make the correct decision about who will stay and who will go is rather insulting.

And, really, it all boils down to just another way for the producers to make sure the "chosen one" will stay in the game as long as possible (cough, sputter, Danny Gokey)...even if they have a bad week. If this had happened a couple seasons ago, Chris Daughtry would have been the American Idol...and David Archuleta last year.

I sort of hope I'm not right, but I just have a feeling (especially since Dancing with the Stars is now doing eliminations this way, too).

Season 8: Your Top 12? Don't Stop Me Now

Ladies and Gentleman, allow me to introduce you to your American Idol Class of Season 8! Here are the Top 12, in no particular order. Actually, had it not been for the Internet, I never would have known that there were 13 contestants who were chosen to go through. The DVR cut off with like 5 minutes left. Darn you American Idol for going over your allotted time! So, without further ado, here are your Baker's Dozen:

Matt Giraud - This Michigan Dueling Piano player impressed with his initial audition, and in Hollywood week, but faltered when he attempted a Coldplay song. To all the future American Idol contestants: Don't sing Coldplay. Coldplay can't even sing Coldplay right....did anyone see their horrendous performance at the Grammys? But Matt won America (and the judges) back with his smooth rendition of The Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You"...Matt has a unique style and when he's on his game, he captivates. Part of me wonders, though, if Matt is more of a piano player than a singer. Time will tell. One thing's for sure: Matt will do better when he is allowed to accompany himself on the piano. Can't wait to see what he brings next.

Megan Corkrey - Most people know her as "tattoo girl"...however, I like to identify her as, "the one who dances like Elaine." Somebody give that girl some choreography. Oh boy, does she need help! Megan impressed me with her first audition, and I thought her first round performance of "Put Your Records On" was unique and refreshing. Based on her wild card performance, though, Megan should not have made it through. It was not a good vocal. But, even though I'm rethinking this decision, I chose Megan as the winner a long time ago, so I will stick with her for a few more weeks. If Megan can get the right songs to sing, I have the feeling she'll do great, but I just can't envision what she'll do during country music week. Bonus Question: What artist originally recorded the song Megan sang during the Wild Card show?

Anoop Desai - Noop Dog has been lovable and charismatic since he first walked into the audition room and met the judges. He's different...and he's got a nice little "Geek Chic" thing going on. But my relationship with Anoop has been a turbulent one. I liked his audition and Hollywood Week performances, but his round one choice of that Monica song (who has heard Monica's name since 1998?) left a bad taste in my mouth. I think everyone knew that Anoop would be a shoo-in for the Top 12, and since, in AI Producer's eyes, America made the wrong choice, of course he would be brought back for a shot at the Wild Card. Anoop's choice to sing "My Prerogative" was stale. We had heard it before. And, honestly, the singing wasn't that good tonight. Anoop made it through on charm, and it really wasn't fair treatment by the judges, but I won't hold that against him. I still have love for the Noop Dog (mostly just because I like calling him that).

Jasmine Murray - Jasmine is pretty and poised. Those are the good things. Now, onto her voice: Jasmine has continually proven that her vocal ability is lacking. Jasmine's voice is nasally, whiny, and off pitch. I don't think she deserved a spot in the Top 12 because I've never enjoyed one of her performances...ever. If any of my readers think Jasmine was a good choice, please comment and tell me why! I just don't get it.

Lil Rounds - I have to say, I like what Lil is bringing. I have heard some complaints that she is similar to previous contestants like Fantasia Barrino and Jennifer Hudson, but I think there's something different about Lil. She's fresh and current. She's not a power ballad kind of girl. Lil is spunky and energetic and filled with magnetism. I think her spot in the Top 12 was predestined by Idol producers, but I also think it was well-deserved. Lil earned her keep with that Mary J. Blige song, and I think she'll be around for a long time. Interestingly, though, I don't see her winning. I think Lil will be this season's shocking early exit (like Michael Johns from Season 7).

Scott MacIntyre - Here is where America rises and collectively begins to beat me up. I don't think Scott belongs on American Idol. His voice is not bad, but it's not good ENOUGH. And, almost more importantly, his style is too old for the show. Scott should have been born 30 years earlier because he would have fit in great when Elton John and Billy Joel were in their proverbial heydays. Scott's performance of a song I had never heard before about a mandolin was yawn-instigating and his vocals were all over the place. Scott's story is incredibly inspirational. Who doesn't have their heart warmed by watching someone overcome a lifetime of obstacles to rise to the top? But I think the patronizing way in which the judges are handling Scott is offensive and unfair. If anyone else had chosen to sing a song like that, they would have been criticized for their song choice. I don't think Scott really deserved to be in the Top 12 based on the "mandolin" performance. And I don't want to watch an entire season of the judges sugar coating the things they say to him. I don't think Scott would want special treatment from them, either.

Jorge Nunez - I'm impressed with Jorge's voice, and his personality is endearing. He's another one who may be a little irrelevant for American audiences in 2009, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I think maybe after a few more weeks, he will evolve out of the Marc Anthony/Jon Secada genre, and into something more current. I have to say, I really like Jorge. I hope he makes it far on the show.

Adam Lambert - Adam lays it all out on the table. From his androgynous style, to his over-the-top performances, Adam lets everyone know who he is and what can do. The judges have been on people's cases for over-singing songs this season, but they haven't really complained to Adam much. Even his screechy and dramatic performance of "Satisfaction" was adored and praised. I don't know...for some reason the over-the-top stuff works for Adam. Maybe it's because he's confident. With someone like Von Smith, you get the feeling that he's over-singing to compensate for a lack of confidence...like he's trying too hard. But with Adam, he over-sings simply because that's who he is...and he's good at it. I may be eating my words in a few weeks, when we've listened to three separate screaming renditions of classic rock songs. But for now, I'm on Team Adam.

Kris Allen - I really don't have much to say about Kris because I can't remember his voice or even his face. I remember that he sang Man in the Mirror and it was okay. If Jasmine isn't the first casualty of the Top 13, I think it will definitely be Kris.

Allison Iraheta - I was generally unimpressed with Allison until she sang Heart's "Alone". She really "smashed it out of the box" (as Randy would say) with that performance. Her voice is rich and warm and powerful. The judges were right to compare her to Kelly Clarkson. That's exactly who her voice reminds me of...maybe a little Pink, too. I am anticipating what Allison will bring next time. I think her age may be her Achilles heel, though, because the young contestants seem to struggle as the competition wears on.

Michael Sarver - Unfortunately, I don't remember much about Michael, either. He works on an oil rig. And he seems like a pleasant person. I can't remember his voice, though, or what song he sang. I don't think Michael has much of a chance to make it very far on the show. But time will tell.

Danny Gokey - It's blatantly obvious that Danny is Idol's "chosen one" this season (much like David Archuleta from last season). Danny has been featured and subsequently buzzed about more than anyone else on the show. Personally, he's not my favorite (the Chosen One never is). I think his voice is good, but not great. I think his musical style is decent, but it's been done before. I think his story is touching, but flirting with exploitation. But America (and the judges) seem to love this guy. I'm not ready to write him off completely, but I'm also not embracing him just yet. We're not BFF's.

Alexis Grace - I hate her pink hair...but that girl can SING! I honestly liked the dichotomy of a soulful voice coming from a cute, plain Jane, girl next door. I think the whole "dirty it up" thing was a mistake. Alexis should have stayed true to who she was, but instead, she came out onstage wearing black lingerie. But that voice? Alexis has consistently blown me away with her vocal prowess. There's not a doubt in my mind that Alexis will breeze through to at least the Top 4.

Those who didn't make it:

I still don't think it's fair that Felicia was cut, and Ju'Not Joyer for that matter. I can only hope that these two were recognized by some important people, and that they will get the chance they deserved.

Speaking of deserved chances...Ricky Braddy out sang three of the four Wild Card picks tonight. Plus he's from Nashville, so he's already cool. It's a shame that he wasn't showcased more during the earlier episodes. Maybe then he would have had some popularity with the fans, and would have made it through the first time he sang. It's just not fair.

Also not making it through, every one's favorite girl-on-the-edge-of-clinically-insane, Tatiana Nicole Del Toro (it shames me to share a name with her). I could not even look at the screen while this train wreck was happening tonight with her. It's just too much. The thing is, I think Tatiana knows exactly what she's doing. She will forever be remembered in the annals of American Idol history as one of the most identifiable, freak show contestants. And I'm sure she'll get a TV deal or a book deal or something out of all of this. Bonus Question: What did Paula chide Tatiana for during her final judgment on the show? (hint: it was very uncharacteristic of Paula to say this...and very smart and funny.)

Top 36: Group 3...It's Not Over

We've almost made it to the Top 12, people! Tonight's performances were about the same as the last two performance episodes we've seen. Some good, some bad, and some just strange. Here's the rundown:

Von Smith: You're All I Need to Get By - Marvin Gaye. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of Von Smith. Needless to say, I wasn't expecting much from his performance. Von started out a little too low for his range, and it seemed a little weird. But you know what? Von scaled it back a little, and it kind of worked (I can't believe I'm typing these words right now). Make no mistake, Von is still a little too showy, but this performance was the best I've heard from him. Unfortunately, all the previous screaming he's done, in addition to his ill-fated first performer lot, aren't going to add up, and Von doesn't really stand much of a chance to get through on votes alone...maybe he'll get another shot with the wild card. Who knows? Rating: 8

Taylor Vaifanua: If I Ain't Got You - Alicia Keys. Well, Taylor sure is a pretty girl, and she gave it the old college try. But this performance fell hopelessly flat as soon as she opened her mouth. Taylor could never manage to find her place in the song and the nerves got the best of her. Her performance wasn't good enough. Rating: 6

Alex Wagner-Trugman: I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues - Elton John. This kid is hilarious! Alex managed, without even trying, to do what Norman Gentle was attempting all along: to endear himself to America through awkward performances and decidedly white dance moves. I still can't figure out whether Alex was doing this on purpose or not, but bless his little heart because he made me laugh. Rating: 7 (please note that personality was a major factor in this rating)

Arianna Asfar: The Winner Takes it All - Abba. Arianna had to know that her song choice would be an inevitable pun from the judges' table. I have heard her sing much better before. Honestly, she would have been better to stick with the "cute" Arianna for a couple more weeks, and then chosen a great song with which to blow our minds. This wasn't the week. Arianna should have stayed true to herself. Rating: 6

Ju'Not Joyner: Hey There Delilah - The Plain White T's. I think Ju'Not did a great job with this song, but his one fault was that someone else had already given a really memorable performance of it during Hollywood Week. Does anyone remember Jamar Rogers, Danny Gokey's BFF? Jamar's performance was quirky and memorable...I can still hear it playing in my mind, 3 weeks after the event. Ju'Not did a good job. He didn't do much else than to just slow the song down a little. I think Ju'Not has a distinct John Legend vibe about his voice, minus the confidence of course. I hope Ju'Not gets another shot with the Wild card, because I really think he can pull through. Rating: 7

Kristin McNamara: Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman. First of all, I don't think Kristin's hair was ever "accidentally" purple. I think she was going for a look that didn't work out for her, and decided to blame it on her hairstylist...poor hairstylist. I think Kristin chose a good song for her voice. Kristin doesn't have one of the strongest voices in the competition, but she did a good job of faking it with this performance. Rating: 8

Nathaniel Marshall: I Would Do Anything for Love - Meatloaf. Wow. Nathaniel needs to leave Los Angeles and move to New York. He would make a great cast member of A Chorus Line! Or maybe Wham! is planning a reunion tour. He'd fit in perfectly there. Unfortunately, Nathaniel is just not the right kind of performer for the American Idol venue. It's not gonna work, buddy. Rating: 6

Felicia Barton: No One - Alicia Keys. I know there were a couple of sour notes here, but I love Felicia's voice. One thing that's evident when Felicia sings is that she pours soul into it. I love the richness of her performance and the tone of her voice. If she doesn't make it through with the popular vote, I am expecting a wild card to come her way. Rating: 8

Scott McIntyre: Mandolin Rain - Bruce Hornsby. I think, like Matt Giraud from last week, that Scott sounds better and more natural when he's behind a piano. That being said, he gave a decent performance tonight. I'm afraid his style in music, though, is a little irrelevant for the American Idol audience. I'm not sure how he's going to fare. He seemed to be a crowd favorite, but I don't know if people will vote for someone who has consistently chosen songs that were more than 2 decades old. Rating: 7

Kendall Beard: This One's for the Girls - Martina McBride. Martina McBride is for country music, what Whitney Houston is for pop. It's highly unlikely that an amateur singer will be able to tackle a Martina McBride song with success. Kendall was no exception to this rule. She reminds me of various cute blonde girls who made it through to the semifinals on Idol, but then got cut before the Top 12. I don't expect things to go any differently for Kendall. Rating: 6

Jorge Nunez: Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Elton John. If you were able to look past the eyebrows, you probably heard a brilliant performance. Aside from maybe Adam Lambert, I think Jorge has the strongest male voice in the competition. I'm not sure how successful Jorge would be as a recording artist, since his style (Marc Anthony) isn't really popular anymore. But, boy, it's sure nice to listen to him sing a song. Rating: 9

Lil Rounds: Be without You - Mary J. Blige. Lil is a very engaging performer. I loved how she got the audience involved in her performance. She knows her way around a stage and really showed that she's a different caliber of performer than most everyone else tonight. She's definitely one of the more seasoned singers this season. I wish she would have chosen a song that showed off her vocal abilities more, though. Rating: 8

Who will stay? My Predictions: Lil Rounds, Felicia Barton, Jorge Nunez. Remember, that there is another Thursday show this week, and then we'll finally be ready for the Top 12!

Top 36: Group 2...The Show Must Go On

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm already about sick of American Idol this season. I don't know exactly what it is....but I am continually finding myself annoyed as I watch. Tonight's episode had me bored and antsy. Hopefully it will get better as the season moves along...hopefully.

This new format just isn't working for me. I don't want to have to get to know 36 contestants before I can pick a favorite. I'm frustrated when my favorites don't perform like I'm expecting them to (Stevie Wright and Matt Giraud). And, more than anything, it just takes so dang long to watch two long episodes a week full of commercial breaks and mediocre talent. And those judges?! Oh, the humanity! I have never in my life heard four people use so many words to say absolutely nothing at all. If I hear one more thing about "song choice" I think I'm going to throw my remote control through the screen.

I'm really rooting for my American Idol to pull through....otherwise, I fear this may just be my last season. And that makes me sad.

Okay, now that I have that off my chest, here's what I thought about tonight's show:

Paula is gone. Kara is afraid of looking stupid. Randy is NOT afraid of looking stupid. And Simon occasionally has something intelligent to say.

Jasmine Murray: Love Song - Sara Bareilles. When Jasmine first began singing, I thought she might be a reincarnation of Stevie Wright from last week. She started out way too low for her register and sounded terrible. She sort of got it together (more than Stevie ever did, anyway) later on in the song, but she definitely isn't the caliber of performer American Idol is looking for. Rating: 6

Matt Giraud: Viva La Vida - Coldplay. I was incredibly disappointed by Matt's performance tonight. He was one of my favorites from the earlier rounds and I know he is a very talented musician. Here's what I think the problem is: Matt's voice is good, but it's not necessarily technically precise. He's more of a gritty blues singer, and he compensates for the vocals with the use of his piano. I don't think he's very comfortable singing without a piano, and it showed tonight. Oh man, I really hope this guy gets a wild card. Rating: 6

Jeanine Vailes: This Love - Maroon 5. Oh my. There's a reason why Jeanine was never showcased in the audition or Hollywood rounds...the judges knew she would never make it. She was nothing more than Top 36 filler. Sorry to say that, but it's obvious. Jeanine was singing in a different key than the band playing behind her. And that "diva hand"? I almost thought she was trying to generate some momentum so she could fly away. Rating: 5

Nick Mitchell: And I Am Telling You - Dreamgirls. What a joke (and no, that's not a compliment)! For anyone else, performing a song you had already done during Hollywood week would receive stern chastisement from the judges. But the judges, in their fogged oblivion, continue to throw compliments to Nick/Norman about what an amazing entertainer he is. Well, I'm sorry, but I felt like I was watching a rerun. We have seen Nick do that same exact bit before. It wasn't that funny then, and it definitely wasn't funny now. Nick's performance was nothing more than 3 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. He doesn't even deserve a rating from me.

I can understand what Nick is doing. American Idol is the biggest TV show in the nation...and if you wanted to get recognized for your talent (whatever that talent is), of course the best venue to be recognized would be on national television, on the show with the most viewers. I get that.

What I don't understand, however, is why American Idol is trying to hold onto Nick. Is this season's talent pool really that low, that they have to rely on someone who isn't even a singer? On any previous season, someone like Nick would have been showcased in an audition episode and then sent on his merry way...I'm sure this is what Nick was expecting. But why is he still on the show, not singing well, and--honestly--not really being that funny? It's a mystery to me.

Allison Iraheta: Alone - Heart. Well, the biggest surprise of the night for me was Allison. I remember seeing her audition and thinking that he really wasn't that good. But her voice tonight sounded so rich and full. She was without a doubt in the top 2 performances of the evening. I just hope she made a name for herself tonight so she can continue on. Rating: 9

Kris allen: Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson. Kris should have chosen a song that would have shown off his range better. Michael Jackson is known as an entertainer, but nobody ever said his singing was great. I'm continually baffled at why people want to sing his songs on this show. Kris's performance fell flat, and I don't think we'll see him again, unless miraculously, the judges decide to bring him back for the wild card show. Rating: 6

Megan Corkrey: Put Your Records On - Corrine Bailey Rae. Megan is (yes, that's present tense) my favorite person in the competition this season. I love her unique voice and her free spirited style. I was concerned about how Megan's voice would sound when she started to sing more contemporary songs. I think she made a great choice for tonight's show. She was able to make the song her own and make a memorable performance. Was it perfectly on pitch? No. There were some bad notes in there, and her dancing was a little strange...but I just can't help pulling for this girl. I think she could really be successful. Rating: 8

Matt Breitzke: If You Could Only See - Tonic. Matt sounded alright...but he fell into doing an impression of the original song with his performance...right down to the strange pronunciation of the word "could" (it is NOT "kuud"). I like that song, but that always bothered me...call me picky. Rating: 7 Another thing I noticed about Matt....his dancing is like watching slow motion. That made me laugh.

Jesse Langseth: Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes. Jesse had some parts of her song that were really good and other parts that were really bad. I guess that makes her a neutral in my book. I think Jesse took the easy way out this week. She should have chosen a current song and made it her own, but instead, she chose an old favorite. Simon was right: she is forgettable. Rating: 7

Kai Kalama: What Becomes of the Broken Hearted - Jimmy Ruffin. Oh boy. Kai's performance had me stifling the laughter (the only reason I was stifling was because I was watching with someone who liked him). From his "sexy" faces to his cheesy dancing to his mentions of his ailing mother...it was just all over the top. Kai was trying way too hard tonight. His voice is nice to listen to, but he was born about 50 years too late. And his hair looks like Sideshow Bob. Rating: 6

Mishavonna Henson: Drops of Jupiter - Train. Mishavonna sounded pretty good with her song. I was surprised by her, too, because I didn't like the little bit I heard during Hollywood Week. I can't figure out why the younger ones on the show tonight are the most seasoned performers...it doesn't make much sense to me. I was impressed by Mishavonna...although, her ending note sucked. Rating: 7

Adam Lambert: Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones. I think Adam is on a different caliber than most of the other contestants this season. It's almost as if he's TOO good. I prefer to see contestants who are vulnerable and imperfect....and then they progress throughout the season, so that they're ready to record by the time they get to the finals. I think in that sense, Adam isn't very relatable. His voice is unbelievable, though, it reminds me of Freddie Mercury from Queen (my favorite!). Rating: 9

My predictions for this week: Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, and (I'm going out on a limb here) Megan Corkrey

Season 8: Top 36 Performances - Group 1...Jaded

I have to tell you, I don't think it was a smart idea for American Idol producers to let America decide on the Top 36. With only 3 people from each week making it through, I think people will choose favorites too early, and then lose interest when their favorites are booted early on. But, once again, nobody at the show asked for my opinion...so I'll just passive-aggressively post it in my blog.

A few other brief issues tonight: First of all, Kara is going to need to grow a backbone and an opinion if she is interested in being asked back for next season. Did anyone else think she echoed Randy on every single performance tonight? Kara, if you're going to get your opinions from someone else, please don't let it be Randy. For crying out loud.

And secondly, did anybody else feel embarrassed and insulted by the shameless "pimping" of Mr. Danny Gokey? Man, by the way the judges were falling at his feet, you would think Danny had just singlehandedly saved a litter of puppies from a burning building.

But more on Danny later...here's a rundown of the performances:

Jackie Tohn: A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Pressley. First of all, what made Jackie decide to dress like Peg Bundy? Part of me wonders if she lost a bet and had to wear that outfit. This was not a good performance for Jackie. She sang the song too slowly. She's almost too goofy to be taken seriously at this point. I honestly don't think Jackie has a shot at the Top 12. At first, I found her raspy voice and her wacky humor endearing...now I realize, though, that Jackie's voice isn't really all that strong, and the humor and charisma is probably a mask to cover that up. Hey, Britney Spears uses nudity to compensate for her lack of vocal prowess, why can't Jackie use a couple of jokes and a pair of high top tennis shoes? Sorry, Jackie, I think your time on Idol has expired. Rating: 5

Ricky Braddy: A Song for You - Leon Russell. Ricky isn't to blame for his plight. His lack of exposure thus far in the competition has definitely hurt his chances. But Ricky didn't help anything by dressing like a lounge singer and selecting a boring and old song. He sounded decent, but I've heard better on that song before (namely, Elliot Yamin). Ricky really would have done better with a more current, up tempo song. Rating: 7

Alexis Grace: Never Loved A Man - Aretha Franklin. I don't care for Alexis' new "dirty" style...anyone who is so willing and eager to change herself for the sake of marketing is probably not really sure of who she is as a performer. I think it looks like Alexis is trying too hard to please the judges, and not worrying about what works for her. The pink hair, the red lipstick and the tight black dress just don't suit her. She seems like a girl next door type. Hopefully she figures this out before it's too late. That being said, her rendition of this Aretha song was great. I think Alexis is definitely one of the strongest voices on the show this season, and I'm fairly certain that she'll make it far in the competition. Rating: 8

Brent Keith: Hick Town - Jason Aldean. I really think Brent is a good singer. He knows who he is, and he knows who his fans are....and, most importantly, he knows how to engage them. He made a comment in passing at the end of his judgment from Simon Cowell that will make the country music fans pick up the phones and vote for him. I do think Brent should have chosen a song that would have incorporated a broader vocal range, because we heard him do much more in his initial audition, but for this performance, I think he did great. Rating: 7.5

Stevie Wright: You Belong to Me - Taylor Swift. Wow. I don't know what happened with Stevie. I think she's another prime example of trying too hard to please the judges. At this stage in the competition, I think it's better to stick with what you know. Stevie should have opted for a soulful ballad that would showcase her (usually) incredible voice. Instead, she tried too hard to be contemporary and that, combined with singing in the completely wrong key, and an unimagineable amount of nerves, proved a recipe for disaster. My heart broke for poor Stevie as she struggled to make it through the song. America's going to miss out, because I remember how awe-inspiring Stevie was from her audition. Rating: 5 (because she was really a trooper while she was being raked over the coals by the judges, and then Ryan)

Anoop Desai: Angel of Mine - Monica. What a peculiar song choice, but I think it sort of worked. It was a choice that made me raise my eyebrows, but then it also forced me to really pay attention. Much like Anoop's rendition of My Prerogative during Hollywood Week, this isn't what you would expect him to sing. I thought Anoop sounded a little whiny at some parts, and his style seems a little too old for the show. But he's still a very versatile singer with a lot of talent. Rating: 7

Casey Carlson: Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police. I think we all knew this would go nowhere. It's too bad American Idol isn't a beauty pageant, or a Broadway show, for that matter, because Casey is beautiful enough and dramatic enough to be successful in those venues. The hand gestures and the winking were all a little much for her to expect us to take her seriously. Casey just doesn't have a strong enough voice to make it as a singer. She reminds me of Hayley Scarnato from season 6. Rating: 5.5

Michael Sarver: I Don't Wanna Be - Gavin DeGraw. I love this song just as much as the next guy, but didn't we hear enough of it during the audition rounds and also Hollywood Week? I wish Michael would have made a different choice. I guess his performance was pretty good, but it just seems like everyone who tries to sing that song is doing an impression of Gavin DeGraw. Michael probably should have sung a country song. It seems like that's where he's headed anyway. I thought he sounded pretty good overall. He was a little herky-jerky during his performance, but I'll chalk it up to nerves. Rating: 7

Anne Marie Boskovich: Natural Woman - Aretha Franklin. I thought this was a pretty cliche song choice. Anne Marie looks like she's 40, and she really would have benefited from choosing a song that was more current and fresh. Anne Marie suffered a few voice cracks while she sang, but she was probably one of the better female performers of the evening. She got a little snarky when she made the comment about Sara Bareilles, but I have to say, I admire her candor. She's right, Sara Bareilles' "Love Song" is not as good as "Natural Woman", but on the other hand, it's more appropriate for Anne Marie's voice and her level of experience as a professional singer. Rating: 7

Stephen Fowler: Rock with You - Michael Jackson. It wasn't a good night for people with any form of the name "Steve" tonight. Stephen's rendition of this overrated Michael Jackson song was whiny and flat. He should have made a bigger, better song choice. Something that would have given him a boost of confidence. Something by John Legend or someone like that. On top of all of that, Stephen made a lot of stink faces while he was singing. It was distracting. He certainly didn't perform up to his potential tonight. Rating: 6

Tatiana Del Toro: Saving All My Love - Whitney Houston. I love how Tatiana adopts the Spanish accent whenever she remembers to, but the rest of the time she sounds like she's from Nebraska or anywhere else in the U.S. Tatiana's song may have started out a little too low, and very, very cheesy (with all of the singing into the camera crap), but I was shocked to find that she's actually a decent singer. It's too bad we couldn't see that through all of the theatrics. She's such a basket case, I don't know what she's going to do when she doesn't make it through. Rating: 8

Danny Gokey: Hero - Mariah Carey. Notice how the "chosen one" got to sing in the best spot on the show? I'm not surprised at all....I take that back: I am a little surprised that the Producers are being so blatant about who they are obviously wanting America to vote for. I find it insulting to my intelligence, to be honest. I thought Danny's song choice was cheesy and boring. But I will say that his was the best performance of the night. That was to be expected, though. The judges were laying it on a little thick, don't you think? I thought Kara was going to walk up and start kissing his feet at any moment. Rating: 9
